The Australian Greens and the Labor Party have signed an agreement to ensure stability for Labor in Government. The Greens will ensure supply and oppose any motion of no confidence in the Government from other parties or MPs.

Labor will work with the Greens to deliver improved transparency and integrity to Parliament and pursue policies that promote the national interest and address climate change.

As part of the agreement there will be regular meetings between the Prime Minister and Australian Greens Leader Bob Brown and newly-elected Lower House MP Adam Bandt.

"There will be a Climate Change Committee resourced as a Cabinet Committee, an investment in dental health care in the next budget and completion of a $20 million study into High Speed Rail by July 2011," said Australian Greens Leader Bob Brown.

Andrew Robb (the Coalition's campaign spokesperson for 2010) has effectively endorsed the Greens in the Senate as good insurance against WorkChoices.

AAP reports today "The Australian Greens would have the balance of power in the Senate to stymie any attempt to change the [industrial relations] laws, Mr Robb said."

"Mr Robb appears to be endorsing the Greens in the Senate as a hedge against the Coalition re-introducing WorkChoices.

"If people are worried about WorkChoices or Mr Abbott's plan to cut 12,000 jobs from the public service, they should vote for the Greens' Lin Hatfield Dodds," Senator Brown said.

Tasmania trap set for Liberal voters: Liberal voters' preferences will go to Labor, not Greens

Media Release | Spokesperson Bob Brown
Friday 20th August 2010, 6:51pm

Australian Greens Leader Bob Brown says Tasmanian Liberal voters who want their preferences to go to the Greens should not vote above the line in the Senate.

"Tasmania is the only state in Australia where the Liberal Party is directing Senate preferences to Labor ahead of the Greens. To avoid this trap, Liberal Senate voters who prefer the Greens ticket, headed by Christine Milne, over Labor, should vote below the line," Senator Brown said.

Of course, the best way to advance Tasmania's future, for example better funding for education, is to put the Greens first in both the House and the Senate, " Senator Brown said.

Debate farce!

Tuesday 17th August 2010, 2:44pm

Australian Greens Leader Bob Brown says the Gillard-Abbott disagreement over a last week election campaign debate has become a farce.

"There should have been three debates, with three leaders, with the public involved, arbitrated by an Independent Election Debates Commission," Senator Brown said.

"Both major parties are haemorrhaging votes over this.

"People tell me they are fed up.

"If Tony Abbott insists it be tonight and Julia Gillard insists it be tomorrow night I can fill the void and will willingly step into both debates, featuring the economy," Senator Brown said.
