Cost of obesity staggering - Brown

Greens Leader Bob Brown today said the $21 billion cost of obesity, calculated by Access Economics, was staggering.
"Obesity presents a stunning challenge to individuals, businesses and governments in Australia," Senator Brown said.

"The reported $21 billion cost of obesity, more than double the cost of Medicare, validates the Greens' longstanding call for a ban on junk food advertising during children's television viewing hours. But it also highlights the need for a review of truth in advertising on foods and whole change of mindset from the top level of government downwards."

"What's really needed is a coordinated commonwealth plan to tackle obesity – encouraging people to exercise is not enough. This is a huge challenge for the Minister for Health," Senator Brown said.
