A briefing note from senior Labor MP Martin Ferguson to union associates confirms the Australian Greens' contention that expanded uranium mining will inevitably lead to a nuclear waste dump in Australia, Greens Leader Bob Brown said today.
"Both John Howard and Kim Beazley should come clean with the Australian public and make it clear that Australia will become a high-level nuclear waste dump for the world as a consequence of open-slather uranium exports," Senator Brown said.
"This is a major election issue for 2007. If the Prime Minister won't level with the obvious nuclear waste dump scenario he is creating, those Labor Premiers favouring uranium exports should do so."
"Honest politics demands a nuclear waste dump be put on the agenda with uranium export policies," Senator Brown said.
"The Greens are campaigning for energy efficiency and renewable energy, which have better long-term jobs and export potential than uranuim," Senator Brown said.
