In the Senate today, Greens Leader Bob Brown made an impassioned plea to the Howard government to save the world's greatest rock art site from destruction.
Senator Brown visited Western Australia's Burrup Peninsula saw some of its 500,000 to one million petroglyphs, with Senator Siewert last month.
"Western Australia's Carpenter government says it will protect 60% - that is, allow the destruction of 40% - of this globally important site which should be World Heritage listed," Senator Brown said.
"Losing 40% of the Burrup would be like losing 40% of Stonehenge or one of the three great Pyramids of Egypt," said Senator Brown.
