Greens Leader Bob Brown has sent Kevin Rudd a list of a dozen policy initiatives which would put Labor on the track to a 2007 election victory. Here is the list:
1. Bring Australian troops home from Iraq
2. Have David Hicks returned to Australia
3. A first term referendum on the Republic
4. Tackle Australia's addiction to coal with a renewable energy target of 25% by 2020 and legislation to reduce Australia's greenhouse gas emissions by 20% by 2020 and 80% by 2050
5. Make good your standing commitment to end land clearing and protect old growth forests in Australia
6. Halt the destruction of ancient rock carvings on the Burrup Peninsula in Western Australia
7. Put the spotlight on human rights and democracy in China in the lead up to the 2008 Beijing Olympics
8. Insist that access for human rights monitors and foreign journalists to West Papua be part of any treaty with Indonesia
9. Protect families from the epidemic of childhood obesity by banning junk food advertising
10. Lift funding for public education
11. Scrap the 30 per cent private health insurance rebate and introduce a strategy to increase the life expectancy of Indigenous Australians until it is equal that of other Australians
12. Allow Australians death with dignity
"These are clear choices, forks in the road for Labor" said Senator Brown.
"Bring troops home from Iraq OR leave them there at the White House's call."
"Have the United States return David Hicks to Australia OR leave him incarcerated without trial."
"Put the spotlight on human rights abuses in China OR ignore them."
"End land clearing OR allow the continued destruction of old growth forests."
