The destruction of Australia's biggest living carbon banks by the export woodchip industry makes forestry a carbon negative sector of the economy, Greens Leader Bob Brown said today.
 
"So Forestry Minister Eric Abetz's "Hello!" call to Richard Branson and Al Gore that trees will save the world is fatuous, because Senator Abetz policy involves destruction of huge forests and replacing them with plantations storing far less carbon," Senator Brown said.
 
Senator Brown has called on Senator Abetz to release government estimates of the volume of greenhouse gases and particulate matter which will pollute the atmosphere from the massive forest burnoffs, authorised by Abetz, currently under way in Southern Australia.
