Costello Should Clear the Air on Political Parties GST Status - Brown

27 May 2000 | Bob Brown

Treasurer Peter Costello should clear the air on the Australia Institute's apparently valid claims that political parties will get charity status and so be GST exempt under the new tax laws, Greens Senator Bob Brown said in Hobart today.

In Hobart last Wednesday, The Prime Minister Mr Howard was asked by ABC radio's Tim Cox why political parties will get charity like status under the GST and Mr Howard replied:

' because they're not-for-profit organisations – I can assure you the Liberal party does not make any money'

However, Assistant Treasurer Rod Kemp and the Deputy Commissioner for Taxation, Mr Rich Matthews have claimed political parties will not be exempt.

"Political parties should not be GST-free. Many community organisations, and in some activities even charities, cop the GST. Mr Costello should give an unambiguous statement on the matter", Senator Brown said.
