Tarkine threat

Tasmania's Tarkine ranks alongside Kakadu, the Kimberly and the Daintree as one of Australia's most spectacular wilderness areas. Plans for a new 132km road by Forestry Tasmania threaten the integrity of this ancient place.
The $23 million proposal will open up pristine rainforest for logging and destroy the thriving tourism industry in Tasmania's rugged North-West.
New evidence suggests that the cost of this road could blow out to over $45 million. There is also fresh concerns about the impact on the endangered Tasmanian Devil. Conservation groups, toursim operators, local councils and the state's tourism body all oppose this destructive development. The Tasmanian Government has committed to going ahead with this project, despite widespread opposition from the community.
