New last hope for koalas: Greens to table ‘Koala Protection Bill’

Today Australian Greens Senators Bob Brown and Larissa Waters are releasing their Koala Protection Bill which will be introduced into the Senate in June.

"The purpose of the Bill is to make sure koalas, as an iconic Australian species and of significant cultural heritage, have special protection," said Senator Brown.
 
The Bill makes it unlawful to kill, harm or otherwise deal with a koala anywhere is Australia and further makes it an offence to destroy or harm koala habitat in areas where the koala has been listed as threatened by the Environment Minster.

Listen up! The Cashews performed a tribute song to Bob Brown this morning in the 666ABC studio in Canberra, on Ross Solly's popular Satirical Sing-a-long.

Listeners were challenged earlier in the week to write lyrics for 'Bob Brown, you've cut your career shorter' to the tune of 'Mrs Brown, you have a lovely daughter'. Originally written by Trevor Peacock, the best known version of this 1963 track was performed by Herman's Hermits and hit number one in 1965.

This morning I resigned as Leader of the Australian Greens. I will leave the Senate in June when the Tasmanian Greens nominate a replacement Senator. The time has come.

Queensland Premier Campbell Newman's call to abandon federal laws to protect the environment is a clear sign that Tony Abbott will dismantle the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act if he were to win the 2013 election, Australian Greens Leader Bob Brown said today.

"Newman says the Gillard government is influenced by me on the environment. But you can read his own words as Tony Abbott's future action," Senator Brown said in Canberra.

Local government wants decisive role in phone towers

At today's hearing into Tasmanian Senator Bob Brown's bill to improve community consultation into towers built by telecommunications carriers, the Local Government Association's Adrian Beresford-Wylie said local government wanted the right to accept or reject proposals.

"The distress caused by towers being foisted on communities with little notice will not be met by the new code of practice the industry now proposes," Senator Brown said.
