Australian Greens Leader Bob Brown today applauded the decision by the United Nations Security Council's decision to clear the way for an immediate no-fly zone and "all necessary measures" to protect the people of Libya from Muammar Gaddafi's cruel dictatorship.
"Yesterday, I expressed the Greens support for a no-fly zone to be established by the United Nations and the Australian Greens reiterate that support today," Senator Brown said in Canberra today.
"We support United Nations action, by force, to prevent Colonel Gaddafi from the bloodbath that will occur if his forces are allowed to overrun the remaining pro-democracy rebel-held positions in Libya."
"Australians can only imagine what it is like to be in rebel-held territory facing the armaments that Gaddafi has at his command."
"It was the Greens who first called for Australian military intervention in Timor Leste, during the Howard years. We now support UN-backed moves to protect the beleaguered people who are under attack by Colonel Gaddafi in Libya."
"Colonel Gaddafi's political demise is long overdue."
