Australian Greens Leader Senator Bob Brown has welcomed the $820000 Commonwealth Grant to get rid of introduced predatory carp from Tasmania’s Lake Sorell.
“It’s great news. The experts working on carp eradication are devoted beyond the call of duty and are world leaders in protecting native eco-systems from such pest invasions.
“They have a really good strategy to get rid of the carp which would otherwise spread throughout Tasmania’s river and lake systems.
Senator Brown has called on Dick Adams and Bryan Green to also eliminate logging from the headwaters of streams which are habitat for the world’s biggest freshwater Crayfish in Tasmania.
“This is another invasive activity which threatens the survival of another of Tasmania’s iconic species,” Senator Brown said.
Senator Brown has lobbied several Ministers for the grant announced today.
