Rudd dithers over whaling - Greens

Media Release
Bob Brown 19 Feb 2010

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd should be taking the Japanese whalers to the International Court of Justice this whaling season and not next whaling season Australian Greens Leader Bob Brown said today.

"Thousands of whales have been slaughtered while Kevin Rudd has dithered over action," said Senator Brown.

"Australians were promised court action against the whalers by Mr Rudd in 2007.

"Meanwhile the slaughter goes on in Antarctica.

"Australia should seek an injunction to stop current whaling while the International Court of Justice determines the matter," Bob Brown said.

Meanwhile the Japanese Government says there is no time in Foreign Minister Okada's scheduled visit to Australia next weekend for him to meet with Greens Leader Senator Brown.

"Mr Okada does not want to be confronted by the ugly reality of Japanese whaling which is opposed by 94% of Australians," Senator Brown said.

"He is squibbing on whaling."
