Rudd dumps Tibet - Greens
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has dumped Tibet and will be at the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics with leaders who have Tibet clamped under military control, Australian Greens Leader Bob Brown said today.
"It was so predictable," Senator Brown said today. "But it raises the question: why has he kept Australia waiting so long? What, if anything at all, has this government done since the bloodshed in Tibet in March, to lift Beijing's suppression of the 7 million Tibetans? Nothing at all is the answer," Senator Brown said.
"The lead up to the Olympic Games is the best opportunity for world leaders to apply diplomatic pressure on Beijing to enter into meaningful dialogue with the Dalai Lama, but Mr Rudd, like Mr Howard before him, has dumped the Tibetans in favour of good times gatherings with the Beijing communist bosses," Senator Brown said.
"Just as the fanfare at Bali last December has been followed by inaction on climate change, so the fanfare of Mr Rudd's speech at Beijing University 2 months ago has had zero follow-up. This announcement, just days before the Olympic torch arrives in Tibet will dismay all those Australians who thought Mr Rudd would take a more courageous stand on Tibet than his predecessor Mr Howard," Senator Brown said."
