Rudd should use 'zhengyou' on China's censors
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd should phone President Hu Jintao and have him stop the police-state censorship of the internet before the Olympics begin, Greens Leader Bob Brown said in Melbourne today.
"In Beijing Mr Rudd said he wanted to be China's 'zhengyou' or straight-talking friend. It's time for straight talk. 'Drop the internet bans or I won't be coming,' Mr Rudd should tell Mr Hu.
"The option is a full kowtow with Jintao; to bend at the knee to Hu's repressive communist police state which refuses the press access online to sites like Amnesty International dealing with Tibet, Falun Gong, and democracy.
There is said to be more than 20,000 internet police in China. Trying to access information on Tibet can bring police to your door within 30 minutes. What is Mr Rudd going to do about this?" Senator Brown asked.
