The three Tasmanian hunters arrested in Idaho have brought shame upon the state, Australian Greens Leader Bob Brown told reporters today.

Strong recommendations to arrest dramatic declines in koala numbers across Australia are at the heart of a Senate inquiry report tabled in parliament today, Australian Greens Leader Bob Brown said.

"I referred the problems facing koalas to a Senate inquiry because experts told me we were fast approaching a crisis point," Senator Brown said in Canberra.

"Some might call the predicted thousands of trucks descending on Canberra ending up as hundreds (ABC, 21/8/11) a ‘flop', but these Australians have every right to a peaceful presence on the parliamentary lawns," Greens Leader Bob Brown said today.

"It seems like the prime qualification to be there is to be angry about something - these are Abbott's angry people," Senator Brown said.

"But it seems their views on some issues are fairly shorted sighted, very ‘me-now'."

He also spoke about the eBay bidding for "Breakfast with Bob" ahead of tonight’s MidWinter Ball at Parliament House, the latest Newspoll, Greens legislation to prevent the export of live animals for slaughter and the need to process animals in Australia, and across-the-board support for plain-packaging for cigarettes.

Greens Leader Bob Brown today urged federal parliamentarians to unite behind new laws to stop live exports of animals for slaughter.

"We've written to the government and opposition to urge them to make debate on live exports a priority when parliament resumes on 14 June," Senator Brown said in Hobart.

The federal Minister for Forestry, Senator Joe Ludwig, was nonplussed when questioned today about piles of corn in a burnt and blackened forestry coup under Tasmania's Mt La Perouse.

Greens Leader Bob Brown said during Senate estimates that he saw corn distributed in piles along a logging road on Saturday. He asked Minister Ludwig if the corn was laced with poison to kill marsupials, including rare and endangered species (eg ringtail possums and wombats).
