Provisional Senate result in Western Australia

Bob Brown 2 Oct 2013

The Greens are disappointed with the provisional result of the Western Australian Senate count.

Scrutineers have identified the result may have come down to a 14 vote margin and will likely require a recount before the final result is known.

Dear Green Friends --

This morning I resigned as Leader of the Australian Greens. I will leave the Senate in June when the Tasmanian Greens nominate a replacement Senator. The time has come.

I wanted to immediately thank you for your support, enthusiasm and direct involvement in Green politics on my watch. I can never forget or adequately repay the personal encouragement I have received over so many years from you, my family, friends, colleagues, work mates, party workers, voters and supporters.

Brandis must disqualify from privileges committee

Australian Greens Leader Bob Brown has called on Liberal powerbroker George Brandis to remove himself, or be removed, from the Senate Privileges Committee because he has pre-judged the question of the integrity of Greens Senators Brown and Milne.

"I have reminded the Senate that the Committee of Privileges has the power to recommend jail sentences of six months for Senators. It is parallel to our courts, must apply standards of justice like those of the courts and its decisions are appellable to the courts. Senator Brandis must go," Senator Brown said in Canberra today.

Greens urge big parties to get behind constitutional reform

Bob Brown 22 Dec 2011

Australian Greens Leader Bob Brown welcomed the release today of the report by the Expert Panel on Constitutional Recognition of Local Government.

"The Gillard government and the Opposition should get behind this important and needed constitutional reform," Senator Brown said.

"The panel's outcome is the result of the process that stemmed from the agreement the Greens signed with Labor on 1 September 2010."
