Libs ‘throw in towel’ on carbon debate

In the Senate, the Coalition has thrown in the towel on the carbon debate, Australian Greens Leader Bob Brown said today.

"A line-up of Coalition Senators took all morning to debate the proposal that Greens Senator Penny Wright replace Liberal Senator Gary Humphries as chair of the Legal and Constitutional References Committee," Senator Brown said.

"In a tactical blunder, Opposition Senate Leader Eric Abetz attempted to amend the motion to have a Green replace his own fellow Senator Mary-Jo Fisher as chair of the Environment and Communications Committee.

Australian Greens Leader Bob Brown spoke to Ross Solly on 666ABC radio today after legislation which ensures the democratic rights of territory citizens won't be overturned at the whim of a federal minister passed federal parliament last night, the first Greens bill to become law.

Other topics included asylum seekers, Qantas and the Coalition, the delinking of the government's proposed tax break for big business from the watered-down mining tax legislation, and coal seam gas.

Bob Brown, Adam Bandt, with all other federal Greens MPs, welcome the passage of the territories bill

Australian Greens Leader Bob Brown and Member for Melbourne Adam Bandt, accompanied by all other federal Greens MPs, held a press conference in Canberra today about the passage into law of the Greens' bill ensuring the democratic right of territory citizens to be governed by their elected representatives without a federal executive override.

This is the first Greens' bill ever to pass the federal parliament.
