Greens propose plan for fairer superannuation, reform of $30b in tax breaks

Australian Greens Leader Bob Brown today released the Greens’ proposal to be put to the Superannuation Roundtable recently established by the Government after talks with the Greens.

“The Greens had detailed discussions with the Government about the revenue going to superannuation as part of the mining tax package, and the need to review superannuation tax concessions. We need to make the system fairer,” Senator Brown said in Canberra.

Greens back superannuation tax fairness

Australian Greens Leader Bob Brown today supported calls from the ACTU and ACOSS for changes to the $30 billion worth of superannuation tax concessions that favour top earners before the Gillard Government’s mining tax package is debated in the Senate.

“The Government has linked the mining tax to a rise in the superannuation guarantee to 12% from 9%. We are supportive of the rise but believe significant changes need to be made to taxation arrangements to make the system fairer and more equitable,” Senator Brown said.

Australian Greens Leader Bob Brown and the Member for Melbourne Adam Bandt talk to reporters in Canberra about the mining tax, after the Prime Minister's MRRT announcement.

Senator Brown said superannuation taxation arrangements can be made much more socially equitable and the Gillard Government's open cheque book approach to refunding mining companies for royalties paid to states should be reviewed by the Senate.

Adam Bandt also commented on his move in the House of Representatives to amend the McCarthyite Building & Construction Commission bill.

Bob Brown, Adam Bandt - press conference on a fairer mining tax and a safe exit from Afghanistan

Australian Greens Leader Bob Brown and Member for Melbourne Adam Bandt outlined the Greens' position on the MRRT, namely to protect the revenue stream from moves in Parliament to further water down the mining tax.

The Greens will also move for a debate on setting a date for a safe exit of Australian troops from Afghanistan.
