Greens Senator for WA Scott Ludlam, former Australian Greens Leader Bob Brown and NZ Greens spokesperson for Energy Gareth Hughes MP united with key members of the WA renewable energy industry today to warn against an attack on renewable energy policy following Saturday's Federal election.

"Every time Tony Abbott opens his mouth he is costing WA jobs and investment," Scott Ludlam, Greens Senator for Western Australia said at a joint press conference.

Australian Greens Leader Bob Brown today condemned the government-business agenda to wreck environmental laws.

"There is no evidence that delays are jeopardising the viability of any projects. The boom is still booming. In fact, no major resource extraction projects have been refused under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act," Senator Brown said.

Today's call to strip down environmental processes and fast track everything - mining mega-developments to shopping centres - is a war on the Australian people's quality of life and the environment by the big end of town, Greens Leader Bob Brown said today.

"The idea of not providing protections for wild and scenic Australia as the big mining corporations roll in and do what they like will horrify Australians who respect this nation's wildlife and scenic beauty," Senator Brown said.

Under questioning from the Greens today, Australian Government has acknowledged it has the power to use the national environment laws to protect Wild Rivers from Campbell Newman and a future LNP Queensland Government, which has pledged to roll back the laws against the wishes of many Aboriginal communities.

“Tony Abbott and Campbell Newman are trying to wind back these laws which protect our most pristine and valuable river systems from the ravages of big mining,” Australian Greens environment spokesperson Senator Larissa Waters said.

Australian Greens Leader Bob Brown has called on the government to review the mining tax soon after it begins, with the aim of increasing revenue so that much-needed nation-building reforms such as Gonski's schools funding measures, Denticare, national disability insurance, high-speed rail and a sovereign wealth fund can proceed.

With the Senate set to vote on the mining tax today, Senator Brown has released a letter from the Prime Minister in which the government agrees to new measures to publish more up to date data about what the mining tax will bring in.

 Australian Greens Leader Bob Brown says the government could be setting an example to the world with an efficient tax to ensure Australians get a fair share of the returns from the nation's mineral wealth, and putting aside some of the proceeds in a sovereign wealth fund for the needs of future generations.

 "Australia should take this opportunity to put in place an efficient, forward-thinking resources rent tax that reaps a fair share for this and future generations," Senator Brown said today.

Australian Greens Leader Bob Brown says the Gillard government has itself to blame if the Senate delays passage of the mining tax package in coming weeks.

"Where is the government's promised tax cut for small business (from 30% to 29%) due to start in July? It is reasonable to want to see legislation for the small business tax cut before handling the rest of the package," Senator Bob Brown said in Hobart today.

We should encourage, not vilify, the attempt by concerned citizens to make the mining public policy debate less lop-sided, Australian Greens Leader Bob Brown said today.

"We see full page ads coming from the mining billionaires at the moment, proving the point about vested interests throwing their weight around and skewing public policy. There is a lopsided public discourse going on. The green groups are adding balance. Good on them," Senator Brown said in Sydney.

Australia should secure its future with a fair dinkum mining tax, Australian Greens Leader Bob Brown said today.

"Treasurer Wayne Swan is right. Australia's fair go is under threat," Senator Brown said in Hobart.

"Australia can fund its education needs - including the $5 billion proposed by the Gonski review, health services, public transport, a national dental program and high speed rail. There is an additional $100 billion available over the next 10 years if we implement the original super-profits tax," Senator Brown said.
