The federal government should not featherbed the big mining corporations by rebating state royalties, and Barry O'Farrell should get his facts right on the carbon price, Greens Leader Bob Brown said today.

"The Gillard government is in a bind over its feeble mining tax. Already, $100 billion is being lost over the next 10 years from the public purse. This is money which should be going to hospitals, housing, schools, dental care or developing high-speed rail," Senator Brown said in Hobart.

An overwhelming number of Australians want a moratorium on the coal seam gas industry, according to a new Galaxy poll released by Australian Greens leader Bob Brown and Greens Senator for Queensland Larissa Waters.

The poll of 1,048 people showed that 68 per cent of Australians support a moratorium on coal seam gas (CSG) until the full health and environmental impacts of disrupting water aquifers are known.

“There is overwhelming support from the Australian people for a moratorium on this potentially devastating industry,” Senator Brown said.

"The Mineral Resource Rent Tax will generate between $73 billion and $115 billion less revenue over 9 years than the original Resources Super Profits Tax recommended by Treasury", said Senator Brown.
