The Gillard government's proposed mining tax needs to be amended to include gold and uranium, if not all minerals, and the daft plan to refund royalties should be dropped, Australian Greens Leader Bob Brown said in Canberra today.

"If you're going to have massive profits flowing offshore to foreign owners, why not divert a percentage to fund services that people need - now and into the future?

Australian Greens Leader Bob Brown today launched an analysis of Tasmania's economic potential which finds 3000 jobs could be created from the $120 million fund promised in the intergovernmental forest agreement.

"This fund has the potential to create more than 3000 jobs in regional areas which would largely replace the 3500 jobs lost from forestry since 2008," Senator Brown said.

"But this money will only flow if there is a strong conservation legislative outcome by June this year.

“The Government has linked the mining tax to a rise in the superannuation guarantee to 12% from 9%. We are supportive of the rise but believe significant changes need to be made to taxation arrangements to make the system fairer and more equitable,” Senator Brown said.
